About the museum
The Wolkoff House is one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Lappeenranta. The oldest part of the house was built in 1826 by the merchant Jacob Claudelin. The plot was owned by several merchants until the merchant Ivan Wolkoff bought it in 1872. Wolkoff had risen from a Russian serf to a merchant, and his heirs continued trading in the house until the early 1920s. After that the shop premises were rented to other merchants, and the family lived in the house until 1983.
The house, home to four generations, was donated for museum use by a decision of the estate in 1986. The interior, built up in layers over decades, gives the museum a homely atmosphere. In the house museum, Orthodox culture and the family's Russian background are strongly present, and many objects show the important position of the Wolkoffs in the Orthodox parish of Lappeenranta and in the history of the Pokrova Church in Linnoitus.
At Easter and Christmas the house is dressed in the festive attire of the Wolkoffs' era.
