About the museum
Ratsuväkimuseo is located in the oldest building in Lappeenranta, completed in 1772 as the guardhouse of the fortress, beside the Vyborg Gate. The stone building has been a museum since 1973. It was renovated in 2018–2019, when the exhibition on the history of the cavalry was renewed and the building’s historical layers were brought back into view.
The exhibition Hakkapeliitoista hurmahousuihin (From Hakkapeliitta to Hurmahousut) presents the stages of Finnish cavalry from the 1500s to the present day and gives an account of cavalry life over the centuries. The exhibition emphasises storytelling and displays objects related to cavalry and horses from the times of war and peace. It also explains why Lappeenranta is a cavalry city.
A museum shop operates alongside the museum. For children and families there are self-guided tasks, such as the horse quiz (hevosvisa) and a picture orienteering (kuvasuunnistus).
