About the museum
Lappeenrannan taidemuseo is located in the Lappeenranta Fortress, opposite the Orthodox church, in neoclassical barracks buildings from 1798. The museum has operated since 1965.
The museum’s exhibitions focus on contemporary art, but older art is also presented regularly. An important focus is art from South-Eastern Finland, and the programme also includes exhibitions presenting foreign art.
The art museum’s collections consist mainly of Finnish visual art from the 1800s to the present day. A large and important collection is that of the Viipurin Taiteenystävät ry (Vyborg Friends of Art). In collection acquisitions, South-Eastern Finnish art receives particular attention. A museum shop operates alongside the museum, and the building houses the Muusa multi-purpose space.
