About the museum
The Kauhava knife and textile museum introduces the various stages of knife-making and a wide knife collection, which includes old rarities. At the entrance visitors are greeted by Kauhava’s “ugly bailiff” (ruma vallesmanni), district constable Adolf Hägglund, and the häjyt; objects belonging to the Hägglund family are also on display. The exhibition also features a rarity ordered from the Kauhava knife factory in 1901: a three-function knife (kolmineuvoinen puukko), which is presented in Lester C. Tähtinen’s book Collectable Knives of Finland.
The history of the weaving trade in Kauhava is presented through an extensive textile collection. On display are, among other things, a bridal gown from the 1920s and an unusual button collection with hundreds of buttons. The museum shop sells handicraft products, books and jewellery.
The museum is located in the east wing of Kauhava’s main library. It is maintained by the City of Kauhava.
