About the museum
The Ränkimäen talomuseo began in the 1930s, when objects began to be collected for museum purposes in Lapua. The actual museum area was assembled only after the wars, mainly in the early 1950s. The site chosen was Ränkimäki, where a Russian artillery position had been located during the Finnish War.
About fifteen buildings from different parts of Lapua have been moved to the yard. The site was built on the open-air museum concept, and in reality no one has lived in the yard. The first building to rise at Ränkimäki was a windmill, but the oldest is a smithy from the 1700s, which was originally a smoke sauna.
The museum is maintained by Lapua-Seura ry. In July the area hosts popular traditional-games weeks (perinneleikkiviikot) and other heritage events.
