About the museum
The Kauppilanmäki museum area is located in central Valkeakoski, a few hundred metres from Myllysaari, on the south side of the canal. The area presents the living conditions of paper-mill workers from 1870 to 1920. The museum was founded by Valkeakoski-Seura and opened in 1960, and the association donated the area to the City of Valkeakoski in 1973.
The area has five residential buildings that depict the housing of workers from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. In addition, the area has a workers’ hall (työväentalo), a smoke sauna and a granary. The yard area is a public park, where one can spend time also outside the museum buildings.
The museum houses can be visited only with a guide, and the guided tour is included in the price of the admission ticket. In summer the area holds open-house days, concerts and other events, and the workers’ hall hosts photo exhibitions.

The guided tour is included in the admission ticket. Admission is free for under 7s, war veterans, Lotta Svärd members (lotat) and history students. Payment: cash, bank card and Museokortti (Finnish Museum Card).

The museum area is a park partly on a hill, with sandy roads and paths. The terrain and the buildings are partly difficult to access, and the museum buildings cannot be entered without stairs. The upper courtyard has level lawn. There is an accessible toilet on site.
