About the museum
The museum is based on the workshop of Nestor Valerian Lehmuskoski (1885–1950), a tanner from Kauvatsa, at Lievikoski, where work was still carried out during the war. His sons Valto and Teuvo Lehmuskoski inherited their father's and grandfather's tools and supplies, as well as the work books from the 19th century, in which decades of customer records are kept. The brothers wanted to preserve the objects so that the public could get to know them, and so the idea of a museum was born.
The museum space was restored by volunteer work in one room of the old Lähteenmäki school building, built in 1911. The objects were cleaned, catalogued and prepared for display by volunteers. The finished museum was handed over to the Kauvatsa Local Heritage Association on condition that the objects remain in the Kauvatsa area and that the museum be open to the public if desired.
In addition to the tanner's tools, the museum displays objects related to the shoemaker's trade and Kauvatsa's straw-work tradition: in the 1950s and 1960s, Kauvatsa still produced sun hats, small baskets and other everyday items from straw and aspen splints.
