About the museum

The Kemijärvi local heritage museum operates in a medium-sized peasant farmhouse dating from the 18th century, which stands in its original location. The house is also called the smith’s house (sepän talo), as the Särkelä family kept up the smith’s trade for six generations. The museum building is the house of the farm’s first resident family. Its history includes the smallpox epidemic of the 1780s, after which 16-year-old Maria took over the farm and her seven siblings.

The museum is run by Kemijärven Kotikiekerö ry, which has owned and managed it since 1972. The collections consist mainly of objects and photographs donated by local residents, numbering several thousand.

The exhibitions tell of the traditional livelihoods of Kemijärvi residents: cattle farming, forestry, fishing, hunting and reindeer herding.
