About the museum
The Sallan sota- ja jälleenrakennusajan museo (Salla War and Reconstruction Era Museum) tells of the history of Salla and the former municipality of Kuolajärvi, from the early 20th century to around the 1960s. The museum was founded in 2010 and operates on the site of Salla’s old railway station, near the centre. The museum is accompanied by the Rajakievari border lodge, more than a hundred years old.
The permanent exhibition, “Salla – From Kuolajärvi through the Wars to the Reconstruction Era”, presents life and livelihoods in Kuolajärvi before the wars and at the time of independence, the events of the Winter War, the Continuation War and the Lapland War in Salla, and the post-war reconstruction. After the war, Salla developed in the 1960s into one of Finland’s largest milk-producing municipalities.
The museum has a Pirttikahvila (Pirtti café) and a museum shop. In summer the museum grounds also host an outdoor exhibition, “Moivainsokka – Vaivojen maa” (Land of Troubles).
