About the museum
Kirvun pitäjämuseo opened on 23 June 1985, in connection with the Kirvu reunion gatherings (Kirvun kihut) held in Mäntsälä. The museum received its premises in a loan granary owned by Mäntsälä municipality, near Mäntsälä Church. Operations began on the upper floor of the storehouse and expanded to the whole building in 1992. The museum is maintained by the Kirvun Pitäjäseura ry (Kirvu Parish Society) on a voluntary basis.
Kirvu residents have donated many objects to the museum, which were brought along in evacuation loads. Only objects made or used in Kirvu are accepted into the collection, and they give a varied picture of the parish’s everyday work and leisure life. On display are, among other things, flags, posters, maps, costumes and household items. There are about 7,000 photographs of Kirvu.
The museum tells the history of Kirvu, which includes, for example, the felt factories and the Kirvu nature cure sanatorium (luonnonparantola), founded in 1911. Also on display are objects and written notes of Minister Juho Niukkanen, who was born in Kirvu. Kirvu archive material is available to researchers, and the Kirvu local heritage archive operates alongside the museum. The museum belongs to the Museoraitti network of the Finnish Agricultural Museum Sarka.
