About the museum
The museum’s main building was built in 1906 and was the former home of the family of locomotive driver Hjalmar Kuokkanen. The rooms of the house are furnished in the styles of different decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and display period radios, telephones and record players.
The second building houses the radio museum, whose collection includes about 300 radios from different countries and periods, from early crystal receivers to cabinet radios of the 1950s and 1960s. The storerooms hold a further 2,000 objects. Among the rarities is a cabinet radio from 1942–43 whose dial shows the Äänislinna (Petrozavodsk) radio station. The radio collection has been browsable online since 2016.
The military radio museum presents radio equipment used during the Winter War and the Continuation War and after the war, such as Kyynel radios, the Töpö radio used by long-range reconnaissance patrols, the radio of the spy Kerttu Nuorteva and bunker radios. The museum is run by the Kouvolan Putkiradiomuseosäätiö (Kouvola Valve Radio Museum Foundation).
