About the museum
Liminganlahti Nature Centre is located in Liminka on the shore of Liminganlahti, next to an internationally known and valuable bird wetland and resting area for migratory birds. The nature centre opened in 1998. Its exhibitions and outdoor areas are maintained by the municipality of Liminka, and the centre’s hotel, restaurant and sales service are run by Go Arctic Oy.
The main exhibition, Lintujen kahdeksan vuodenaikaa (Eight Seasons of Birds), tells of the course of the year from the birds’ point of view. Its focus is the diverse birdlife of Liminganlahti, but the exhibition also looks at the lives of birds more generally. The multimedia show Elämää Liminganlahdella (Life at Liminganlahti) tells of the wetland and birdlife of the area, and behind the nature centre the Kukkala learning environment presents the plants and habitats of the shore meadow.
A barrier-free route of about 600 metres leads from the nature centre’s yard to the two-storey Virkkula bird tower. The area has campfire sites and a small playground. Binoculars can be borrowed from the nature centre, and about 200 bird species can be spotted in the area.
