About the museum
Luontotalo Arkki opened in 2000 in the former premises of Pori’s telephone company at Pohjoispuisto 7. It is a natural history museum and is part of the Satakunta Museum. The Luontotalo also functions as a regional responsibility museum (alueellinen vastuumuseo).
The permanent exhibition Metsistä merelle (From Forest to Sea) depicts Satakunta’s nature, from the Kokemäenjoki river and its delta, which has a diverse bird fauna, to the Selkämeri coast and the inland forests. Land uplift constantly changes the Selkämeri shore: a coastal meadow gradually turns into a sea-buckthorn thicket and then into an alder grove. The forest section mentions bear, lynx and wolf, and less often wolverine. In the exhibition visitors can climb a miniature lighthouse, look out from a bird tower, balance on duckboards and crawl into a bear’s den. The exhibition was renewed in a major refurbishment completed in December 2024; new species include the kingfisher and a young mountain hare (metsäjänispoikanen). A separate Yyteri section presents typical plants and animals of Yyteri, such as the dune-binding beach wheat (rantavehnä) and the tyllii that rests there during migration.

The main entrance is marked with a MUSEO sign in the courtyard; the doorbell is on the left side of the door, and a removable ramp must be fitted for wheelchairs. The main doors are narrow, so staff open them separately for wheelchair users. An accessible lift is inside the main doors on the right and goes to the second floor, where customer service is. The second entrance at the end of the building leads to steep stairs and is not suitable for people with limited mobility. The exhibition rooms are on the same level as the ticket sales, and both rooms are reached by a gentle ramp. An accessible toilet is at the end of the lobby, to the right of the main entrance; it has a changing table and a potty. An accessible parking space is right next to the main door. Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome, and a water bowl is available at the information desk. Guided tours can be adapted to special needs, for example in Finnish Sign Language and with audio description; please book about two weeks in advance.
