About the museum

The museum of the Satakunnan pelastuslaitos (Satakunta Rescue Service) opened in early summer 2008 at the Pori central fire station. The project was linked to the establishment of regional rescue services, and from the outset the museum’s activities were built on a regional basis. The aim was to support the preservation of the traditions of the previously separate volunteer fire brigades.

The name Waluvaara is old Rauma dialect and refers to a volunteer fire brigade song written by Hj. Nortamo of Rauma. The word means danger of fire.

In addition to objects, the exhibition is based on photographs and texts, and it describes the development of fire services, from village volunteer fire brigades to the permanent fire services of towns. Themes include firefighting techniques, rescue, ambulance and emergency care, the firefighter’s profession and VPK (volunteer fire brigade) activity. The objects date from the 19th century to the 1980s. The large fire engines do not fit in the museum space, but in the lobby of the fire station there is the old T-Ford open fire engine of the Pori fire service.
