About the museum
The building of the Nuijamaan pitäjänmuseo was originally the municipal loan granary (lainajyvästö) of Nuijamaa, completed in 1909–1910; it was the municipality’s first building project. The idea of converting the granary into a museum arose as early as the 1960s, and Nuijamaa municipality founded the museum in 1979. The museum opened in connection with Nuijamaa Day in 1980.
In 2014 Nuijamaa Seura ry and Nuijamaan VPK ry (volunteer fire brigade) bought the museum building from the City of Lappeenranta, and Nuijamaa Seura still runs the museum. The roof was renewed with grants, and the yard area was tidied. In 2016 the Finnish Local Heritage Federation (Suomen Kotiseutuliitto) gave Nuijamaa Seura an honourable mention for the museum rescue project.
The lower floor presents the history of Nuijamaa before the Winter War, and there is also a display on agricultural culture. The museum is run by volunteers.
