About the museum
The building of the Nuutajärven lasimuseo was erected during a period of strong expansion of the glassworks in the 1850s. Originally the factory’s brewery (prykäri) operated in its brick-vaulted rooms, and the building is still known by that name, Prykäri.
The present museum is a total work of art designed by glass artist and professor Kaj Franck: Franck designed the interior architecture and the display cases and selected the objects on display. The museum opened to the public in 1977.
The permanent exhibition presents glass objects made in Nuutajärvi from the village’s early days to the present. From the early days until the 1920s, production included blown window glass as well as bottles, jars and pharmacy glass. Glass began to be pressed in the 1850s, and at the same time filigree glass production was learned at Nuutajärvi. Later production also included engraved, cut and painted utility and art glass, and the exhibition features objects designed for Nuutajärvi by several well-known 20th-century glass artists. The museum’s new section complements the offering with changing exhibitions.
