About the museum
Talonpoikaismuseo Yli-Kirra represents a typical closed-courtyard farmhouse of the 19th-century Satakunta type in Punkalaidun. The farm's economy buildings are arranged around the men's yard and the cattle yard, and the museum site also includes other 19th-century farm buildings, with a threshing barn, workshops and storehouses. The museum was inaugurated in 1954, and it is known as the “Koiramäen talo” (Koiramäki farm) of the writer Mauri Kunnas.
The museum includes a smallholders' area, where the living conditions of the landless population in the 19th century can be seen: a smoke cabin, a cooking hut and an outdoor oven ready for baking. The museum's machine hall shows the mechanisation of agriculture in the 20th century, and the exhibition hall presents the development of grain harvesting from the sickle to the combine harvester. A school museum and collections of artisans' objects complement the whole. The museum site covers several hectares and has about thirty buildings.
The museum is run by the Punkalaitumen Museo- ja Kotiseutuyhdistys (Punkalaidun Museum and Local Heritage Association). The most important event is the Kaikkien Aikojen Maatalousnäyttely (All-Time Agricultural Show), held on the first weekend of July, when local people bring the farm to life with working demonstrations.
