About the museum

The Urjalan kotiseutumuseo with its yard lies on a peaceful and idyllic hill in Urjalankylä. The museum opened to the public in 1950. Its eight buildings were moved into place from various parts of Urjala, and the objects were received as donations.

The main building is a farmhouse main building built at the end of the 18th century, where visitors can learn about the life of a Häme peasant in the late 19th century and the life of a smallholder-craftsman in the 1940s. The special feature of the pirtti (cabin) is a rare ceiling made of split wood (päreet). In the syytinki building a rocking-chair maker lived with his family in the 1940s; the making of Urjala-type rocking chairs had begun in the municipality already in the 1860s.

A replica of the Karhukorsu has been built in the yard; the original stood on the shore of the Syväri for Infantry Regiment 23. The Museokahvila Tiuku café operates at the museum, and in summer events are held there.
