About the museum
The roots of the Perniö Museum lie in the national romanticism of the 19th century. The Finnish Antiquarian Society, founded in 1870, sent its scholarship holders to the provinces to collect and catalogue objects, finds from the countryside and stories. In Perniö, a young schoolboy, Karl Fredrik Kaarlonen, was inspired by this collecting and became a local heritage enthusiast, a collector and an active founding member of the museum, which opened in 1930.
The handsome main building, designed by the architect A. W. Rancken, was completed in 1930; the storehouse dates from 1932. The museum was built symmetrically according to a Caroline floor plan, and its model is said to have been the drawings of the Perniö rectory from 1731. It is one of Finland's oldest museum buildings purpose-built as a museum.
The basic exhibition was completely renewed in 2021. It tells of Perniö's rich prehistory, of life in its villages, manors and ironworks, and of its roads and routes. The basic exhibition is enlivened by the PERNIÖ ensemble made by visual artist Tatu Gustafsson together with the local community.
