About the museum
The Hankasalmi Museum Village is a group of buildings in the church village of Hankasalmi, maintained by a local heritage association. Using buildings, objects, photographs and textiles gathered from various corners of the village, it tells of the lives of the people of the parish over hundreds of years. The museum village includes, among others, a smoke cabin, a clothes granary, a sauna, a cowshed, a kokkitalli (feed-cooking barn), a threshing barn, a windmill, a smithy, a charcoal hut and a boat shed.
The central building of the museum village is the Hallan tupa local heritage house, whose two tupas were built in different centuries: the smaller in the 1620s and the larger in the 1750s. Originally they were smoke cabins, and they were extensively renovated in 1851. The tupa was moved to the museum village in 1966, and its opening was celebrated in 1979. A thorough renovation was carried out in 2018–2020, and today Hallan tupa is also rented for celebrations and meetings.
About 200 metres outside the museum village, in a former grain storehouse completed in 1879, is an object museum, from which the Hankasalmi museum activities originally started. The local heritage association received the building as a gift in 1961, and museum activities began the following year. The permanent exhibition was renewed in 2016, and it covers, among other things, the prehistory of the area, the birth of the parish and the municipality, school and cultural history, and the history of farming and home life.
