About the museum
The Pörtom hembygdsförening (Pörtom Local Heritage Association) was founded in 1951 in connection with the start of archaeological research and excavations in Pörtom. The association got its local heritage museum in 1961, first in the parsonage’s farmhand’s cottage (drängstuga). In 1985–1986 the museum objects were moved to Dalbacken by the main road, about 3.5 km north of Pörtom church. Today eleven houses stand on the site, and the association has around 200 members.
The museum consists mainly of three buildings moved there. Småttgården dates from the 1700s, has an interior from the 1800s, and shows household utensils, farming tools and archaeological finds. In the loft there is a clothing chamber with the Pörtom costume. Ahlholma farm, from the 1850s, was built by the manor owner Olof Sjöberg the younger and displays a collection of glass from the Berga glassworks, which operated 1797–1883, as well as a complete bank interior. Viktor Dalbo’s studio is also on the site. The artist Dalbo (1883–1957) made expressive landscape motifs.
Pörtom has more than 2,300 registered ancient monuments, and near the museum you can see settlement sites and graves from the Stone and Bronze Ages. The museum café serves coffee, and a copy of the 4,200-year-old Pörtomkrukan (Pörtom pot) is for sale.
