About the museum
The Rautalammin museo (Rautalampi Museum) is a local culture-history museum founded in 1938 along the main street of the village. The museum began at Korhola manor, where Mrs Aina Peura (1872–1940), the wife of a commercial counsellor (kauppaneuvos), started collecting local objects in the servants’ quarters of the manor. Commercial counsellor Heikki Peura donated a plot, the funds needed for the foundation, and a forest property to support the museum’s upkeep.
The museum building has three storeys and was designed by the architect Toivo Anttila. The museum is run by the Peuran museosäätiö (Peura Museum Foundation). The collections contain more than 70,000 objects and documents, including objects of peasant and gentry culture, photographs, archive material and North Savo art.
The museum’s permanent exhibition tells of the past of Rautalampi and its surrounding areas, from prehistory to the Second World War. The open-air museum area includes a North Savo smoke cabin (savutupa) from the mid-19th century, storehouses, a windmill and the church boat Kuikka. The museum also has changing exhibitions.
