About the museum
The Sisälähetysseuran museo is located in the premises of the Seurakuntaopisto (Parish Institute) near central Pieksämäki. The oldest parts of the boarding school – the main building, the former children’s home and old people’s home buildings, and the hospital – were built in the early 1950s for the needs of the society, which had moved to Pieksämäki from Sortavala. Today the museum is owned by Kirkkopalvelut ry (Church Services Association), and it received renovated premises in the school’s main building in 2007.
The founding of the museum and the building up of its collections were carried out as volunteer work: lecturer Katri Kuittinen and the museum committee gathered furniture, objects, books and photographs found in the schools and at Koivuranta old people’s home, and former students and staff also donated objects. The collection grew to more than 500 objects, and the museum opened to the public in 1989.
The basic exhibition presents the history of the Sisälähetysseura’s schools and teaching. It displays objects related to the church’s social-work activities and training – nursing, diaconal work, the care of children, the elderly and the disabled, and rehabilitation from substance abuse – including work and student uniforms and textbooks from several decades.
