About the museum

The Temmeksen kotiseutumuseo (Temmes Local Heritage Museum) is located in Temmes in the municipality of Tyrnävä. The museum area includes 13 buildings, the oldest of which dates from the 1760s. The first building, a storehouse, was acquired already in the year the Temmes Local Heritage Association was founded, 1957, and construction of the museum area began in 1967. The area is maintained by volunteer work (talkoot).

The museum area has a restored windmill, built in the early 19th century at the Temmes vicarage. It was later moved to Haapasepän farm and finally to the museum area in 1967. The mill is the area’s only surviving traditional windmill: in the 19th century more than 300 windmills stood on the plains of the region, and today only 11 remain. The local heritage association also owns the Mikkola mill and sawmill building in Haurukylä, and one of the last horse-powered travelling dairies in Finland, in Kärsämäki village.
