About the museum
For decades, the mining of pitch coal shaped the market town of Peißenberg. In 1869 the Tiefstollen was driven here; it originally extended 672 metres into the mountain and shifted the centre of gravity of Upper Bavarian coal mining from Hohenpeißenberg and Peiting to Peißenberg; it was in operation until 1923. Later, the winding tower at the main shaft became the town's landmark.
Seven years after the closure of the mine, former miners and other interested people founded the Verein der Bergbaumuseumsfreunde Peißenberg. In many hours of work, they developed the mine office building erected in 1870, the tunnel, the outdoor areas and the collection into the museum, which was inaugurated on 2 July 1988. The market town of Peißenberg is the owner; the association organises operations and tours – partly led by men who themselves still worked underground.
In 14 rooms of the mine office building, the story of coal in the Pfaffenwinkel and the Alpine foothills is told, from its formation to the last shift. Shaft models, tools, mine lamps, uniforms, photographs and documents as well as a large geological collection show the development of mining technology. The highlight of the tour is the ride on the mine railway into the Tiefstollen, with a demonstration longwall and a demonstration blast in the blasting chamber. In the Tiefstollenhalle built in 1857, once a machine hall and for a time an emergency church, the large exhibits are displayed, such as a hydraulic demonstration longwall, mine fans and a mine locomotive. Since 2025, the museum has been awarded the "Reisen für Alle" seal.
