About the museum
The Stadtmuseum Weilheim is one of the oldest municipal museums in Bavaria. It was founded in 1882 by committed citizens around the umbrella maker Benedikt Höck, in a room of the then town hall. The first pieces came as gifts and loans from the town and surrounding villages. In 1900 it had to move to the Hofgasse, and since 1966 the entire former town hall has again been available to it.
The building was constructed in 1538 as a town hall between the parish church and the market square. With the bread house and grain exchange on the ground floor, it was a multi-purpose building. It received its present form in 1788 through conversion and an added storey. It remained the seat of the town administration until 1936.
The collection includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, tableware, clothing, coins, weapons and photographs. One focus is on the sculptors and painters of the Weilheim School, who made the town an important Bavarian art center in the early 17th century. Due to structural problems, the permanent exhibition is closed until further notice; a museum conversion is being planned.
