About the museum
As early as 1929 the Pollinger Heimatverein (local heritage association) opened a museum with a core of around 800 objects. This triggered a wave of donations. After an interruption, the museum was revived in 1982 and reopened with a celebration in 1983.
It is housed in the former seminarians' building of the Polling monastery, once an Augustinian canons' foundation. Across three floors, the museum displays its collections and, with its variety, recalls the cabinets of curiosities of the Renaissance.
Its main focuses include religious art and popular piety, among them reverse glass painting, natural history, painting and rural everyday culture. Following the tradition of the monastery's former natural history cabinet, the museum also holds an extensive collection of minerals and fossils, as well as a large exhibition on Polling tuff, whose quarries lie on site. The museum is run by the Heimatverein Polling e. V. (local heritage association); the house has brochures on individual collection focuses and on monastery history.
