Cranach's world in the Cranach-Hof on the Markt in Wittenberg: exhibition on the life and work of the painter family in their former residence and workshop.
Retrospective of two teachers at the Jugendkunstschule, with printmaking, paper miniatures and 3D printing. Through strong enlargement or reduction, familiar forms appear new and change the view of size and space.
About the museum
The painter Lucas Cranach the Elder came to the court of the Saxon elector in Wittenberg in 1505 and bought the plot at Markt 4 at the end of 1511. There he founded a family and set up his workshop; several of his children were probably born there. Around 1517/18 he moved into the courtyard on Schlossstraße. The house on the Markt was later taken over by his son-in-law, the apothecary Caspar Pfreundt, who ran a pharmacy in it. Around 1771, parts of the house were rebuilt in the late Baroque style.
From 1989, a citizens' initiative campaigned to save the Cranach courtyards, which led to the founding of the Cranach-Stiftung. Together with the city as owner, the courtyards were renovated from 1990 onward; during the work, wall paintings from the Cranach workshop came to light in the front building. The first construction phase was handed over in 1998, the second in 2007. In the same year, the courtyards were declared a building monument of national significance.
On June 26, 2015, the foundation opened the exhibition "Cranachs Welt" here, which presents the work of the artist family as painters, graphic artists, printers and entrepreneurs. Besides the exhibition, the courtyard houses a museum shop, handicrafts and rooms of the foundation.
