About the museum

The futurea is the science center of SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, a large chemical company in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. In 2013 the company acquired the listed Renaissance house at Markt 25, built around 1540 and used for centuries as a residential and commercial building by wealthy citizens – later also as a Konsum store and as a bank. Over about two years it was renovated together with the neighbouring house and connected to it; the science center opened in 2016.

On around 1,000 square metres and three floors, the interactive exhibition combines the history of the house with scientific questions: on the ground floor, together with the merchant family Blume, who once lived here, the themes are hunger, arable farming and the beginnings of agricultural chemistry. The first floor is devoted to soils, nutrients and the question of how the growing world population can be fed. On the second floor, a detailed model of the plant shows how urea is produced in Piesteritz and where the substance occurs in everyday life.

The house sees itself above all as an out-of-school learning venue: it offers curriculum-based educational programmes from primary school to upper secondary level, project days and career orientation offerings. Until further notice, a visit is possible only by prior registration for schools and groups.
