City museum of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the Zeughaus (arsenal), with town history, the city's "Kronjuwelen" (crown jewels), and the Riemer natural history and ethnographic collection.
Presents more than 20 European minority languages and their cultures through ethnographic objects and images from four centuries, with a focus on the Sorbs. A cooperation with the Freundeskreis der Julius-Riemer-Sammlung (friends of the Julius Riemer Collection).
About the museum
The Zeughaus on Juristenstraße was built in 1855 as a carriage hall (remise) for the artillery of the Prussian fortress of Wittenberg. After a comprehensive renovation of the building and its facade, the city created more than 1,500 square meters of modern exhibition space on three floors by 2018; the museum opened in December 2018.
The new building brought together the city's collections: the holdings of the council archive, the town history and archaeological collection, and the natural history and ethnographic collection of the Berlin manufacturer Julius Riemer, who had set up his own museum for it in Wittenberg after World War II. The council's records, including charters and wax tablets, reach back to the Middle Ages.
On the first floor, the "Kronjuwelen" present selected treasures of the city, including a giant bone from the relic collection of Frederick the Wise, the mayor's chain of office, and a town model from the 1870s. The second floor tells the city's history through the centuries, while the third floor presents taxidermy specimens and ethnographic objects in "Riemers Welt" (Riemer's World). Since 2020 the city has had the provenance of the Riemer collection scientifically investigated; parts of it are considered to have been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
