About the museum

Behind the museum is the association PFLUG e.V., founded in 1992 mainly by historians from the dissolved Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR. Originally focused on rural social history, the association soon shifted its emphasis to everyday culture and began interviewing contemporary witnesses and collecting objects of daily life.

In October 1997 the association opened the "Haus der Geschichte" in a former kindergarten at Schlossstraße 6. Further space was added step by step; since 2003 the museum has used the entire building and shows furnished living environments from the 1920s to the 1980s on three floors.

Today the museum operates as "Haus der AlltagsGeschichte" and sees itself as a museum of urban everyday culture in Central Germany. Alongside the room ensembles – from the 1920s kitchen and the refugee room to the pub, bar, Konsum store, and teenager's room – the holdings include a photo and document archive as well as a collection of over 800 life stories of East Germans.

Highlights

  • Around 20 originally furnished living spaces
  • Village Konsum store, pub, and dance bar
  • Permanent exhibition "Vintage East" on GDR design
  • Everyday life of Germans and Soviet soldiers 1945–1993
  • Audio guide in German and English included

Permanent exhibitions

  • Alltagskultur des 20. Jahrhunderts – On three floors, furnished rooms lead through urban life from the 1920s to the 1980s – from kitchens and living rooms to school, pub, and Konsum store.
  • Vintage East – DDR-Design – Everyday objects from the 1950s to the 1980s, many designed by designers from Central Germany, complemented by clothing and accessories.
  • Wegzeichen – Zeitzeichen – The exhibition sheds light on the coexistence of locals and Soviet soldiers in the region between 1945 and 1993 through contemporary witness accounts.
