About the museum

The house on Rain's Kirchplatz once served as the municipal organist's residence. The children of the organist Lachner grew up here – a large family from which six musicians of the Romantic era emerged. Because there was no money for a piano, the father is said to have painted keys on a wooden bench; the children practiced on it silently and wrote their exercises on slates so as not to disturb one another.

The best-known siblings made careers as conductors and composers: Franz Lachner (1803–1890) shaped Munich's musical life for three decades as court Kapellmeister, Ignaz Lachner (1807–1895) worked as Kapellmeister in several cities, and Vinzenz Lachner (1811–1893) was active in Mannheim for almost four decades.

In 1989 the town of Rain set up a museum in the birthplace. The small exhibition tells of the everyday life of a large family in the Biedermeier period and of the brothers' careers. Documents, manuscripts and original printed music are on display, supplemented by audio samples of their music. The house is looked after by the Rain city archive.
