About the museum
Lindos was one of the three ancient cities of Rhodes, together with Ialysos and Kamiros, and a member of the Dorian Hexapolis. Its great flourishing is placed in the Archaic period, when under the rule of the tyrant Kleoboulos it developed into an important commercial and naval power. After the founding of the city of Rhodes in 407 BC its importance gradually diminished.
The acropolis was always the centre of the town. The worship of Athena there probably goes back to the 9th century BC, and the sanctuary of Athena Lindia gained panhellenic fame in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The Doric temple of the goddess and the Propylaea with their monumental staircase were built in the 4th century BC, while the Hellenistic stoa, 87 metres long with 42 columns, is slightly later.
In the era of the Knights of Saint John, the Knights strengthened the walls of the acropolis on top of the Byzantine fortifications and gave them their present form. At that time the Governor’s residence was built, the seat of the governor of Lindos, and the Byzantine church was dedicated to Saint John, patron of the Order.
