About the museum
The Toy Museum of Rhodes is housed in a two-storey stone building just outside the village of Archipoli. The collection is the personal collection of Thanasis Ioannou, a collector since childhood, and includes toys made in Greece from 1930 to 1990, the year in which the last Greek toy company, El Greco, closed.
The museum was created with the support of an EU rural development programme, with the Association of Friends of Greek Toys as the implementing body, and with the aim of revitalising the countryside. It has hosted play activities, events, puppet theatre, theatre and music, and has also welcomed school visits.
The main hall displays metal wind-up toys, battery-powered cars, board games and Greek Playmobil figures. In the basement there is a games room with pinball machines, a jukebox, Atari and Nintendo consoles and a Pac-Man arcade machine, all of which work. There are also a playground, a roof terrace with a view of the landscape, a space for creative activities with Lego, Playmobil and handicrafts, and a shop selling souvenirs.
