About the museum
The Stamatiadis Mineralogy and Paleontology Museum was founded in 2008 on the initiative of Polychronis E. Stamatiadis. It is the first geological museum on Rhodes and in the Dodecanese. Its aim is to promote the science of geology, raise public awareness of nature and serve pupils, students, researchers and visitors of all ages.
It is housed on the ground floor of the Perla Marina hotel complex on Leoforos Irakleidon. The exhibitions occupy about 300 square metres, with display cases around the perimeter and in the centre of the room. There is also a room with a large screen, where documentaries on nature and the environment are shown.
The exhibition includes Greek minerals such as azurite, malachite, calcite and galena from Lavrio, minerals from Milos (sulphur, obsidian, perlite, bentonite), Serifos and Naxos. For the first time, minerals from Rhodes are also on display. The fossils include marine organisms of the Pliocene, petrified tree trunks, hippurites from Boeotia, ammonites from Epidaurus, fish from Brazil, trilobites from Morocco and a crocodile skull from the Miocene.
