About the museum
The Jewish Museum of Rhodes operates in the Kahal Shalom synagogue, in the former Jewish quarter of the Medieval Town. The synagogue dates from 1577 and is the place of worship of the island’s Jewish community.
The museum welcomed its first visitors in October 1997. It was founded on the initiative of Aron Hason, a lawyer from Los Angeles with roots in Rhodes, and with the approval of the Israelite Community of Rhodes, in the former women’s prayer areas of the synagogue. It grew from two halls to six and reopened after restoration work in 2006. In 2024 the Community began a new renovation and presented the new layout on 18 July 2024.
The exhibitions include photographs and objects that the founder gathered from his own family and from other families of Rhodian Jews, information panels, archival material and an exhibition on the Torah. Through these the visitor learns the history of the Jewish community of Rhodes, which was lost during the Second World War.
