About the museum
The Bee Museum operates on the premises of Melissokomiki Dodekanisou S.A., on the Tsairi–Airport road in Pastida on Rhodes. The company was founded in 1999 and works with more than 70 beekeepers of the islands of the area; it produces and packs honey and other hive products, as well as the traditional Rhodian sweet melekouni.
The museum is housed in modern buildings of its own of 3,000 m², on a plot of 8,500 m² with a beekeeping park. The exhibition is divided into four sections: the history and tradition of beekeeping on Rhodes, the tools and products of the bee, honey and pollination, and the biology of the bee.
Visitors see bees up close in transparent observation hives, learn how honey is produced and use digital exhibits and educational games. In the apiary garden grow herbs and flowers of Rhodes that the bees visit, while the museum’s shop sells natural bee products.
