About the museum
Kamiros lies on the western side of Rhodes and was one of the three city-states, together with Lindos and Ialysos, which according to Homer were founded by the Dorians. Its development rested mainly on agriculture, thanks to the fertile clay soil of the area. The oldest traces of settlement date back to Mycenaean times and come from a cemetery with chamber tombs at Kalavarda.
The surviving antiquities belong to the Hellenistic and Roman town, which was rebuilt over a large area after the strong earthquake of 227/6 BC. The ruins came to light in excavations in the 19th century and above all during the period of Italian rule. In 411 BC the three cities merged into a single state with its centre in the city of Rhodes, but Kamiros continued to be inhabited into late antiquity.
The site is a characteristic example of Hellenistic town planning, harmoniously integrated into the natural landscape.
