About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Lamia is housed on the first floor of the restored Othonian barracks, within the archaeological site of the Castle of Lamia, on the summit of the hill of Akrolamia, the acropolis of the ancient city. The building is a listed monument. The museum presents finds from Fthiotida and Evrytania, which come mainly from sanctuaries and cemeteries and cover the period from prehistory to Late Antiquity.
The exhibition includes Roman sculptures and grave stelae, among them the marble votive relief to Artemis Eileithyia from the end of the 4th century BC, finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age finds from Kyno and a large part of the Archaic period from the oracle of Apollo at Kalapodi.
The museum closed to the public in June 2023, after more than thirty years of operation, for extensive modernisation works. A new presentation of the permanent collection, an upgrade of lighting and display cases and a modernisation of the air-conditioning system are planned.
