About the museum
The Byzantine Museum of Phthiotis is housed in the restored building of a Kapodistrian barracks of 1836 in Ypati. The two-storey building, with its symmetrical openings and sturdy construction of grey limestone, is an example of military austerity and is linked with events of the reign of Otto.
In the museum’s galleries, the life of the region from Early Christian to Byzantine times is presented through archaeological finds. Architectural sculptures from Byzantine churches of Phthiotis are exhibited, together with everyday objects excavated at sites including the basilica of Dafnousia and in Ypati. One room is devoted to the art of mosaic, with characteristic examples from Pelasgia, Achinos and the Baths of Ypati, and explains its methods and materials.
The museum also houses the coin collection donated by Konstantinos Kotsilis, with coins from ancient Greece to Sasanian Persia, as well as from more recent periods.
