About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Distomo was founded in 1994 to gather and display the finds that came to light from the excavations of ancient eastern Phocis. It is housed in the listed building of the town's former primary school, which was inaugurated in 1901 by Ioasaf Kastritis, abbot of the Monastery of Hosios Loukas, and in 1987 was transferred by the Municipality of Distomo to the Ministry of Culture.
Distomo lies on the site of the ancient Phocian city of Ambrossos. The collection includes finds from Ambrossos, Medeon, Karakolithos, Antikyra and Boulis and covers the period from the Mycenaean to the early Christian times. In the vestibule grave stelae of the Classical and Hellenistic periods are displayed; in the first gallery, finds from the excavations at Distomo and Antikyra; and in the second gallery, the pottery of the area, mainly vessels, which shows the development of ceramic art from the Mycenaean to the Roman times.
