About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Chaeronea was founded in 1907 by the Archaeological Society at Athens to house the finds of the area and was renovated in 2009. It is located at the eastern entrance to the settlement, next to the Lion of Chaeronea, the marble funerary monument of the Thebans who fell in the battle of 338 BC.
The exhibition includes finds from prehistoric to Early Christian times. The first space concerns ancient Chaeronea, with weapons, vessels and small objects from the battle of 338 BC, and with coins and weapons from the Tumulus of the Macedonians and the mass grave of the Thebans. The second space concerns prehistoric northern Boeotia and presents everyday objects of the Neolithic period, a collection of bronze vessels from the area of Orchomenos, and a model of a Neolithic house. The last space is devoted to historical times, with vessels and cult objects, coins and sculptures, as well as a 3rd-century BC mosaic with geometric decoration and personifications of the Seasons.
In the museum grounds, which serve as an open-air exhibition space, many inscriptions and grave stelae are displayed. Among the exhibits, a stone sphere with relief depictions of the Sun and the Moon stands out.
