About the museum
The Archaeological Collection of Elateia belongs to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Phthiotis and Evrytania and is located in Elateia. Ancient Elateia played an important role in the history of Phocis, thanks to its position between northern and southern Greece and its control of the road that linked Thermopylae with Chaeronea.
The collection displays finds from the ancient town, from the sanctuary of Athena Kranaia and from various sites in western Locris, from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Sub-Mycenaean period. A partial ground plan of a Neolithic house and the plan of a Mycenaean chamber tomb with grave goods, from excavations of the cemeteries of the area, are presented. From historical times, impressive female busts and theatrical masks stand out, from the cemeteries of Avon, Elateia and Tithorea.
