About the museum
The Nautical and Historical Museum of Galaxidi was founded in 1928 by the doctor and community head Efthymios Vlamis, who gathered paintings with portraits of ships and other maritime objects from residents’ houses. It was first housed in the town hall and was the first maritime museum in Greece. In 1932 the Union of Young People of Galaxidi added an archaeological collection with finds from the wider area. The manuscript “Chronicle of Galaxidi”, which Konstantinos Sathas had discovered in 1864 among the ruins of the Byzantine monastery of Sotiras, also came into the collection.
The listed building was renovated and extended in 2001–2002 at the expense of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and the exhibition was presented in a new form in 2002–2003. Today the museum tells the story of five millennia of the inhabitants’ life and maritime activity, from prehistoric times to the early 20th century.
After the Liberation, Galaxidi acquired about 350 ocean-going sailing ships, and the exhibition follows this maritime and commercial prosperity: shipbuilding and its tools, the types of sailing ships, figureheads, trade routes, ship insurance, navigational instruments and shipping documents. The collection of ship portraits from the 19th and 20th centuries has a special place.
