About the museum
The Ethnological Museum of Thrace is a non-profit organisation operating since 2002, with the aim of preserving historical memory and studying, researching and promoting the culture of Thrace. It is self-financed and occasionally receives grants from bodies. In 2005 it was nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award and received an honourable mention for its activities in the local community; in 2015 it was honoured by the Benaki Museum and in 2021 by UNESCO Greece.
It is housed in a stone-built neoclassical building of 1899 in the centre of Alexandroupoli, the urban mansion of Miltiadis Altinalmazis, a member of a family from Aenos and Adrianople. In 1937 the building was sold as a dowry, and in 1998 the family of Polychronis Giannakidis rented and restored it at their own expense. It was declared a listed building in 1993 and a monument in 2019, and in 2025 it was expropriated in favour of the state so that it could be kept as a museum.
The ethnological and historical material comes from the wider historical area of Thrace. The permanent exhibits cover topics such as clothing and costume, the liturgical cycle and music, food, bronze and clay vessels, and the cultivation of the land. The museum also has a multi-purpose space for events.
