About the museum
The Church Museum of the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupoli was founded in 1976 by Metropolitan Anthimos Roussas, later Metropolitan of Thessaloniki. It was initially housed in two rooms of the Spiritual Centre of the Metropolis, next to the metropolitan church of Agios Nikolaos.
In 1982 the collection, enriched with new relics, was moved to the Leontaridion School, which had already been declared a listed monument in 1978. In 1998 the museum closed temporarily for conservation works on the building and the exhibits. It reopened in May 2000, inaugurated by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with a new museological presentation of the collection.
The collection is divided into eight sections, as many as the halls, and includes more than 400 relics of church art: icons, sacred vessels, priestly vestments, carved woodwork and early printed books. The objects come from the area on both banks of the river Evros and date from the 16th to the 20th century. The halls have themes such as “Church – Education – Society”, “Carved decoration – Sacred vessels”, “The priestly vestments”, “The technique of the icon” and “Orthodox iconography”.
