About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Chora, Andros, has operated since 1981 in a building designed by Stamos Papadakis, which the Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris Foundation donated to the Ministry of Culture. It is located in Kairi Square, in front of the marble Kampani fountain of 1818.
With photographs, models and interpretive material, the exhibition offers a vivid tour of the island’s history from the Neolithic period to Venetian rule. Notable are the finds from the Geometric settlement of Zagora, while funerary and votive reliefs and fragments of statues from the Hellenistic and Roman periods are also on display.
The best-known exhibit is the Hermes of Andros, a Roman copy of a sculptural type of the 4th century BC attributed to Praxiteles. The panorama of medieval finds is complemented by relief architectural members from churches on the island, coats of arms and other works of the Venetian period (16th century). The museum also holds one of the best-preserved copies of the Charta of Rigas Feraios.
