About the museum
The Nautical Museum of Andros was founded in 1972, with a donation from the Goulandris family, to collect and preserve the island’s maritime heirlooms. It is housed in a neoclassical mansion in Chora, near Plateia Afanous Nafti (Unknown Sailor Square), which Dimitrios Rallias donated to the Municipality of Andros in 1957.
The exhibition presents the history of Andros’s merchant shipping from around 1750 to the present day. It includes charter parties and other contracts, ships’ logbooks, lithographs, photographs of Andrian ships, traditional costumes and ship models, ranging from old schooners to modern tankers.
The initial classification of the exhibits was carried out by Matthaios Stylianidis, and the final classification by the ship captain Konstantinos Pantzopoulos.
