About the museum
The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Vassilis & Eliza Goulandris Foundation was inaugurated on 28 July 1979 in Chora, Andros, the birthplace of the founder Vassilis Goulandris, and was the first museum of contemporary art in Greece. The reason for its establishment was the need to house and present the works of the sculptor Michalis Tombros, a native of Andros, which he had bequeathed to his home town. This original core was gradually enriched with works from the personal collection of the Goulandris couple.
On 20 July 1986 the New Wing was inaugurated, designed as a small museum of contemporary art to modern museum standards and suitable for hosting large exhibitions. In 1987 the first major exhibition of international standing was presented there, and in the following years significant periodic exhibitions of works by artists who shaped the 19th and 20th centuries followed.
The museum has a library of more than 5,000 titles, a shop on the ground floor of the New Wing, and a 180 m² roof terrace with a view of the Aegean.
