About the museum
The Archaeological Museum of Palaiopolis is housed in a building donated by the Vassilis and Eliza Goulandris Foundation and has been in operation since 1981. It presents finds from Palaiopolis, the ancient capital of Andros.
The marble sculptural group of Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, with Bellerophon (around 500 BC), which comes from a temple of the ancient city, attracts the particular attention of visitors. An imposing marble lion (around 320 BC) and an inscribed slab with 178 lines of a hymn to the goddess Isis, of Eastern origin (1st century BC), are also displayed.
Of particular interest are the inscriptions with the names of young men who attended the gymnasium of the ancient city in the Hellenistic period. The names were carved on slabs covering the stone benches of the teaching space; the term “topos” indicated the position of each pupil. An inscription of the 2nd century BC names the gymnasiarch and the patron deities of the gymnasium, Hermes and Herakles.
